Highway Access Design & Feasibility

Highway access design for residential, retail and industrial roads play an important role in both the development of a site and the success of a planning application.

Without a “safe and suitable access” there is no development! This is the main requirement all developers must consider to comply with paragraph 108 of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), which requires “…safe and suitable access to the site can be achieved for all users…”

If required, initially, one of our team would visit the site to establish how a suitable access can be provided. If so, detailed highway access drawings can be designed, providing “safe and suitable access for all users”.

HIGHWAY ACCESS DESIGN MUST CONSIDER ALL USERS:

Pedestrians

Cyclists

Cars

Delivery Vehicles

Construction Vehicles

Refuse Vehicles

Emergency Services

Public Transport Vehicles

%

of all planning applications are refused due to a failure to demonstrate a safe and suitable access

ROAD SAFETY AUDIT & DESIGN RESPONSES

Proposed highway designs often go through a Road Safety Audit (RSA), especially if they are within highway limits.

The objective of the RSA process is to provide an effective, independent review of the road safety implications of engineering interventions for all road users, together with suitability of a successful S278 or S38 Agreement.

JG Highway Design is experienced in submitting designs for RSA, and responding to any design comments posed by the safety auditor.
